Let’s take a look at what CCleaner does
This is the first screen you see when you load the program. There is a list of items on the left that you can select to scan. Deleting temporary files will speed your browsers and free up lots of disk space. When is the last time you’ve done that?
If you scroll down on the left you will see more options. Notice the “Wipe Free Space” This option will overwrite your deleted files in such a way as nobody can recover them or read them. The options allow up to 32 wipes per file. The NSA cannot read beyond 3 (or so Iv’e heard). This will maintain your privacy and only wipe deleted files, although there is an option to wipe the entire disk. You would want to do this if you are replacing your drive and ALREADY copied the wanted data off.
This is the Registr repair screen. It will scan your registry of potential errors also note that this can significantly speed your machine. The options on the left will let you select what to scan for.
You are then given the option of backing up your registry just in case the repair breaks something. A backup is a good thing to have. I have never seen a repair break anything but…..you know how PC’s are.
The Third options on the left side of the screen, is tools the first option is the uninstall. This allows you to uninstall programs just like in the control panel, but in a more convient place. You can uninstall. Rename the entry or delete the entry altogether. This is useful if the program was uninstalled but didn’t remove itself from this list.
Here is the option to edit what programs starts when windows starts. Also includes (notice the bottom entries Start-> All Programs-Startup options.
Most of the entries you se in the starup tray are also here. HKLM is the short for the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. HKCU is short for HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
Local_machine is for all users. The HKCU is for the current use logged in. They may or may not be identical.
If you have Restore Points you can select one. This is great if you have an error. Select a restore point sometime before the error.
These are the options foe Driver wiper. You can select “Free space only”. (Which is the default setting.) or “Entire Disk” this is very
dangerous for your Drive data. You can also choose 1 pass, 3 passes, 7 passes and 35 passes. I’m not paranoid but I set to 35 and go to bed.
This last Menu option is Options. This submenu is settings. You can any of 50 languages or many starup otions. The secure delection shows up in your emty recycle bin options and you can select which drives to wipe when selected from mainmenu and default the check box (off screen) selects “Wipe MFT Free space.” Lot of users use NTFS file system rather than FAT32 file system since it supports large drives, offers better performance and encryption of files and folders. MFT means Master File Table which contains index of files on NTFs drives. As computer overwrite and delete files, MFT will be filled with free space which will contains index of pointers to deleted files, you can now set CCleaner to wipe this MFT free space.
This menu option allows you to select what do do about cookies. Cookies you want to keep and cookies you can delete. Since web sites are stateless (they don’t remember anything about you unless you register and they store data in a database) the drop a file with info in it. Like time and date of last visit and screen position info and such. Others drop a cookie that is updated when you go to different sites. Then when you return they pick up the cookie and can trace you tracks. This is NOT PRIVATE. Most browsers allow you to delete cookies when you leave. Technically they have an expiration date but they set them to like the year 2050. So if you want privacy set your browser to clear history and cookies upon exit.
Here you can select specific folders you want to make sure are emptied when you run your scan and delete.
Here you can select folders that you wish wish to save. Exempted from scanning and deleting.
Here are some more advanced options. I leave the defaults unless you know what our doing.
This is the About screen. Note the revision, also the command line options for running. Notice the bottom right. On all of the screens you can check for updates.
The Free version comes without support. Two other versions of CCleaner are available. CCleaner business Edition (For companies) CCleaner Network, CCLeaner Network Professional and and CCleaner Technician edition. The free version is for individual private usage.
