My Sony Xperia S Tablet Review

sony xperia 1

Well, I did it.  I bought my tablet.  I have been writing about them since sprintgtime.  It’s a Sony Xperia S. 16gb ram. Lets look at some of the specs.

Processor Type : NVIDIA® Tegra® 3 Mobile Processor | with 4-PLUS -1™ Quad Core ARM® Cortex™-A9 CPU 1.4 GHz* *Maximum 1.4 GHz (1 Core Operation), Maximum 1.3GHz (Multi-Core Operation)

Display Technology : TFT Color LCD    Resolution : 1280 x 800     Screen Size : 9.4″ (23.8 cm)

With the resolution in the 9.4 inch form factor the picture density is beautiful.  Black background is deep black.

The Battery life is around 12 hrs.

Android 4.0 (actually it came with 4.2 and 4.3 is ready for download)

Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n

Bluetooth 3.0  (talks to my car, my hearing aides, my laptop…)

Full size SD memory slot. The specs say 32g MAX but I put a 64G SDXC   XC supports SD memory up to 2 Terabytes. I formatted the card to exFAT and I know of people who are using 128gb ram SD cards.  Is that cool?

Sony opted for the multiport, so I had to buy the USB port cable.  It’s full size and supports external hard drives.  These last two options are the icing on the cake.

But the sprinkles….. is a built in IR Remote control that when combined with a free Watch now app gives you TV Guide like browsing and click if you want it and the remote will set the channel.

My LG TV has the first option in the LG Catagory, so setup for the Sony Xperia remote feature was quick.

Also, the Sony Xperia has built-in speakers and a headphone jack.

Rear Camera 8 Megapixels ….yes 8

Front is 1 Megapixel.

Supports Skype and I might add nice face time.

Guest mode…..we knew this was coming.  Personalized setting for different users including wallpaper, applications and widgets.

It’s also splash proof.  Yeah like who is going near water with this thing.  They had a problem with the sealer around the screen and Sony recalled them all.  (not a major problem with less than 100k production units).

Plus HDMI Support with optional cable. and DLNA Compatiblity. Digital Living Network Alliance. I read their following statement:

“DLNA makes compatibility challenges a thing of the past. Do you remember the dark digital days, when trying to send movies, music and photos from one brand-name device to another seemed next to impossible? And although the PC in your office and TV in the den were just a room away, they were miles apart in compatibility. Those days are long gone. Welcome to a new day in digital living”

If your TV is not DLNA then a Sony Blueray player is and you can send movies and audio to the Blueray device.  Sony Blueray only.  For all others you can purchase a DLNA receiver and you’re up and running.

This allows for streaming of Video and audio to anywhere in the house.

Look for next generation of routers to have DLNA.  I believe the current Generation is still working the bugs out.

Sony also offers a (plastic) portfolio case with a Surface like keyboard (comparing the no traditional typing feel keyboard option). You can charge your unit from the Micro USB port in the keyboard.   It also comes with a multiport cable to usb charge or usb A for data transfer.  You have to purchase the USB B cable for memory flash cards or external hard drive.  I wonder how my new 3 Terabyte drive will work.  (ok it’s Christmas time and my birthday)

The multiport cover when opened is not attached, so you may loose it.  Put it in a safe place and forget about it. 🙂
If I have left anything out let me know. I’ll update it.

Retail price start at $399 for the Sony Xperia 16 GB 9.4-Inch Tablet S SGPT121US/S. On the accessories, you may find available from $76.24 the Sony IT Cover with Keyboard for Sony Xperia Tablet (SGPSK1). The Sony Xperia also comes with 3 free movie downloads.  And if I’m not mistaken Google offers 50gb of cloud storage.

I haven’t seen much advertising for this product and that disapoints me.  It’s a great product and should be an excellent seller and great gift.
